Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these treatments need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and you become ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
