Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
